Annual General Meeting and Annual Dinner 15th May 2012

This year’s AGM will be held on Tuesday 15th May 2012 at the Midland Hotel, Bradford, commencing at 7:00pm. After what should be a comparatively short meeting we will be holding our Annual Dinner, with guest speaker Ian Dewhirst, commencing at 7:30 pm. Members should already have received an invitation, but non-members will also be welcome at the AGM and the dinner. If you (and your guests) would like to come to the dinner, the cost is £25 per head. Cheques payable to Bradford Civic Society should be sent, along with menu choices (see below) to The Secretary, Bradford Civic Society, 21 Fernbank Drive, Bingley, West Yorkshire, BD16 4PJ.

Menu
First Course: Canteloupe Melon or country pate or Italian antipasti.

Main Course: Pork loin or salmon fillet or Mediterranean vegetable Wellington.

Dessert: Lemon and lime cheesecake or traditional apple pie or selection of cheeses.

The next meeting of the Society will take place on Tuesday 20th March 2012 (NB not on 13th March as previously advertised). The meeting will be held at the Midland Hotel, Bradford and will commence at 7:00pm. We have a guest speaker, Dr Kevin Grady from Leeds Civic Trust who will talk, amongst other things, about how best to influence planners – very much a hot-potato in Bradford, especially for people living in the Wharfe Valley or who are keen for Bradford Council to alter its views over such things as the demolition of the Odeon. As has now become our practice, the meeting will be open to everyone who cares about Bradford.

The Story of Bradford

The Story of Bradford by the chair of Bradford Civic Society, Alan Hall, is due to be published in summer 2012 by Phillimore and Co Ltd. This is a brand new history of Bradford, fully-illustrated with colour and black and white photographs. It is written in a lively and engaging style and traces the story of Bradford from the earliest times right up to David Hockney receiving the Order of Merit in the 2012 New Years Honours list. It is a “warts and all” history, detailing the low points as well as the triumphs. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the roller-coaster fortunes of our unique city. Although it won’t be out in the shops for some time, it is already available to pre-order on-line (usually at a discount price) on Amazon. Waterstones and the Book Depository. The next meeting of Bradford Civic Society will be held on Tuesday 24th January at the Midland Hotel, Bradford, commencing at 7:00pm. All members, their guests and other members of the public interested in being involved in the Society are cordially invited. For those who wish, there will be an informal curry after the meeting at the nearby Nawab Restaurant. Please let the secretary (Mandy) know on the night if you wish to eat! The last meeting of the Society was very well attended and we gained some new members – very encouraging. (An agenda for the meeting will be with all members this week.)

Our next meeting will be on 3rd November 2011 at the Midland Hotel, Bradford, commencing at 7:00pm. This time we have a guest speaker, Dr George Sheeran, who will be talking about Bradford’s modern architecture. All members and friends most welcome. It should be a very interesting meeting.

We hope by then to have finalised a programme of events for the coming months, including visiting speakers and other activities. All members (and those interested in becoming members) are welcome.

Our next meeting will be held on 14th June 2011 at the Midland Hotel, Bradford, starting at 7:00pm. The main business of the meeting will be to discuss a Development Plan for the Society, which will seek to incorporate the ideas contributed by members at the AGM. Funding will also be discussed, especially as we have not been successful in gaining a Grass Roots Grant this year. All members (and anyone else interested in becoming members) are welcome to attend this meeting.

The next meeting of the Executive Committee will be on 29th March 2011 at 7:00pm at the Midland Hotel (Pullman Room), Bradford. Committee meetings are now open to all members of the Society.

CrossRail and Odeon – Council now less adamant?

After the recent meetings of Bradford Council’s Scrutiny Committee regarding the future of the Odeon site and the proposed CrossRail scheme, it seems that the Council is now prepared to give further thought to these two vital issues. In both cases, further discussions are to take place. Whilst this doesn’t mean a radical change in the Council’s stance, nevertheless it might indicate a small gleam of optimistic light. Updates on these discussions will appear here on our website as soon as news is available.
